Antioxidants and atherosclerosis.
The oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) can be induced by various active species by different mechanisms. Vitamin E and other radical-scavenging antioxidants can inhibit the free radical-mediated oxidation of LDL, but they are not effective against LDL oxidation induced by non-radical mechanisms.

Research into the oxidation of lipoproteins has yielded many new insights into the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. However, despite lipoprotein oxidation's biologically plausible role in atherogenesis, several studies have reported inconsistent effects of antioxidants on clinical coronary end points, in sharp contrast with the studies of lipid modification with the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl c...

Cellular lipid oxidation is a known cause for the cascade leading to the formation of lipid laden foam cells, which can cause of atherosclerosis. While statins and antioxidants have recently come under question in the amelioration of atherosclerosis, Flavonoids have recently been touted as a powerful antioxidant and suppresser of atherosclerosis. This paper will attempt to show why statins and ...
متن کاملFlavonoids: Antioxidants Against Atherosclerosis
Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between excessive formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and/or reactive nitrogen species and limited antioxidant defences. Endothelium and nitric oxide (NO) are key regulators of vascular health. NO bioavailability is modulated by ROS that degrade NO, uncouple NO synthase, and inhibit synthesis. Cardiovascular risk conditions contribute to oxidati...
متن کاملNatural antioxidants for the prevention of atherosclerosis.
Hypercholesterolemia, cigarette smoking, hypertension, and obesity are known contributing risk factors for the development of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD). However, they account for only half of all cases of CAD, and the complete pathologic process underlying atherosclerosis remains unknown. Growing evidence suggests that oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) ...
